Dancing bees
Monika Pich

Extract of recordings of the sounds of bees inside a hive. August 2021, Poland.

Like all activities performed by bees, buzzing is used to communicate with each other. The dance of bees is one way of communication.

To receive information, bees need to be very close to the dancer. Worker bees remain motionless and the dancing collector hits their erect antennae with each movement of the abdomen. During the dance, the collector moves and the followers remain in an unchanged position so the pattern of the abdomen's strokes on the antennae of the recruited workers gradually changes.
Being aware of the position of their own bodies and combining the information received by hitting the antennae, the recruited imitators can easily reproduce the dance and read the information encoded in it.
Such a system of transmitting messages is very accurate and reliable. It becomes possible to provide information about sources of nourishment even several kilometers away from the hive.
