Sports and Politics
Tristan Burfield-Soul Crew
Football has historically been a breeding ground for far right
ideology, a channel for a tribal energy which right wing political
groups have regrettably tapped for dubious and often
unsavoury motives.
This piece questions the often uncontested determinist
mainstream narrative posited by the media which often
unquestioningly frames football as ‘the beautiful game’ . Most of
the sounds were generated through overdriven feedback loops
and samples running in tandem. The piece was recorded to 4-
track tape recorder in 2002 and re- edited in 2022. The
background crowd ambience comprises of found sounds
sampled from a BBC documentary Hooligans which in
particular focused on Cardiff City Soul Crew and the violence
that erupted in the 1998 FA Cup. In a similar vein to Andy
Warhol’s Car Crash series, the piece adopts an ambivalent
stance to the controversial source material and invites the
audience to consider the darker side of football and the
tribalism/violence it can stir in the wider public conciosness.
